The bett1 BODYGUARD® Experience
*From Box to Bed in 8 Minutes

written MARK ASHKINS

Eight minutes. One gesture. Sleep begins. Sleep has form. It has volume, resistance, softness. And with BODYGUARD® by bett1, it now carries structure.

Engineered precision, wrapped in textile logic—this mattress activates in eight minutes. No acclimation. No waiting. Just unfold, breathe, lie down. BODYGUARD® arrives fully resolved. A mattress with an uncompromising core made of QXSchaum®—bett1’s proprietary foam, constructed for equilibrium. It performs with method. Breathable, intelligent, anatomically exact. There is clarity in its duality. One side firm, the other yielding. Flip according to tension and instinct. The decision rests with the body, not marketing.

The textile cover unzips fully and moves into the washing machine. It exits clean, dries rapidly, and reconnects with ease. Materials maintain structure through every cycle. The system supports hygiene and routine with clarity and speed.

Precision at the Surface
BODYGUARD® is the result of deliberate engineering, made in Germany. Its internal structure supports spinal alignment, distributes pressure evenly across the body, and maintains airflow through a network of foam chambers designed for thermal balance and anatomical function.

The edges remain firm and structurally sound, offering the same level of support whether pressure is applied centrally or peripherally, while the entire surface adapts intuitively to shifts in weight and movement. This mattress holds its form with quiet integrity, night after night.

From Compression to Clarity in 8 Minutes
Unboxing BODYGUARD® is a transition from vacuum-sealed silence to immediate readiness, unfolding quickly into its complete, designed state. The act feels ceremonial yet efficient—a measured gesture that reflects the same sense of control and calm the mattress brings into the bedroom. Each line expands to its intended volume, each seam settles into place, transforming a technical process into a moment of architectural clarity.

SS25: A Visual Architecture of Rest
bett1’s Spring/Summer 2025 campaign unfolds across Athens and the cliffs of Hydra—photographed by Lottermann & Fuentes with editorial precision. Mattress as object. Mattress as sculpture. Among raw surfaces, Mediterranean light, and structures inhabited by artists, the visuals establish a new grammar for sleep. The campaign expands the bett1 system: BODYGUARD®, jersey fitted sheets, flannel and satin bedding, side-sleeper pillows, and modular toppers—a cohesive language of rest built from purpose and material logic.

Beyond the Mattress: A Cohesive Sleep Framework
bett1’s product universe extends well beyond the core mattress, offering a suite of elements that reinforce its commitment to thoughtful design and intelligent materiality. The jersey fitted sheets embrace the mattress with tailored elasticity, while the satin and flannel bedding sets offer nuanced textures that respond to season, skin, and atmosphere. Side-sleeper pillows are sculpted for alignment, guiding posture through the night, and the modular toppers integrate seamlessly to refine firmness or add plush volume where needed. Each object is conceived with equal intent—as an essential part of a functional, modern sleep system. Together, they form an interconnected structure that elevates rest from ritual to composition.

The cover invites renewal. The design extends across a full ecosystem of sleep objects.

Lighting influences space, atmosphere, and our perception of design. Louis Poulsen has a long history of working with renowned designers to create fixtures that are both practical and poetic.

The VL45 Radiohus series by Vilhelm Lauritzen reflects modernist principles, emphasizing both function and aesthetics. A Classic Reinvented: VL45 Radiohus Pendant

Originally designed in the 1930s for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio House (Radiohuset), the VL45 Radiohus Pendant has endured as a symbol of refined simplicity. Characterized by its multi-layered mouth-blown opal glass and untreated brass detailing, the pendant offers direct and diffused lighting, balancing functionality with soft, ambient warmth. Its ability to provide glare-free light while enhancing the spatial experience has made it a favorite in interiors for decades.

In 2025, Louis Poulsen introduces two new hues—Pale Yellow and Amber— alongside the existing Opal White and Pale Rose. These tones subtly shift in appearance depending on whether the light is on or off, offering a dynamic interplay of color and luminosity. This reinvention expands its versatility, making it an even more compelling choice for contemporary living spaces.

Lauritzen, a pioneer of Danish functionalism, designed the Radiohus Pendant to serve as a thoughtfully crafted source of illumination. He understood light as an architectural element, shaping spaces through brightness and shadow. The VL45 Radiohus Pendant embodies this philosophy, emphasizing clarity and balance in its design.

Portability Meets Elegance: VL45 Radiohus Portable Lamp

Louis Poulsen has crafted the VL45 Radiohus Portable Lamp, a refined, mobile interpretation that brings the same luxurious light experience in a new, adaptable form.

Retaining the signature opal glass shade and brass details of the pendant version, the portable iteration introduces a leather strap for ease of movement, allowing the lamp to be carried effortlessly from one space to another. Whether placed on a windowsill, hung from a balcony hook, or nestled within a cozy interior corner, it transforms its surroundings with soft, glare-free illumination.

With IP44-rated rain resistance, the portable lamp is also suitable for outdoor use, making it an elegant companion for spring and summer evenings on the terrace or illuminating a garden gathering. Functionality is further enhanced by a dimmable LED unit, offering adjustable brightness through intuitive touch controls. A replaceable battery ensures that this piece of design history continues to shine for years to come.

The Man Behind the Light: Vilhelm Lauritzen

Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894–1984) played a significant role in Danish modernist architecture. Guided by the “form follows function” philosophy, he approached architecture and lighting design with equal attention, ensuring that light was an integral part of spatial experience. His portfolio includes notable projects such as Copenhagen’s first airport terminal and the Radiohuset, both of which reflect his dedication to functionality and aesthetics.

A firm believer that “there is no life without aesthetics,” Lauritzen’s approach to lighting was deeply architectural. He designed fixtures that balanced direct illumination with a soft, diffused glow, ensuring that spaces were both well-lit and inviting. His VL45 Radiohus designs—whether pendant or portable—carry this legacy forward, showing how thoughtful lighting enhances interiors.

Louis Poulsen: A Legacy of Light

Since its founding in 1874, Louis Poulsen has been synonymous with high-quality Danish lighting design. The brand’s commitment to craftsmanship, quality materials, and innovation has positioned it as a global leader in architectural and decorative lighting. Working with luminaries like Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton, and Vilhelm Lauritzen, the company has shaped the way we experience light, from homes and workspaces to public institutions. With showrooms in Copenhagen, Oslo, Miami, Singapore, and New York, Louis Poulsen continues to expand its presence, bringing Danish lighting traditions to a global audience. The reintroduction of the VL45 Radiohus Pendant in new colors and the launch of the Portable Lamp reinforce its dedication to advancing lighting design.

The VL45 Radiohus Pendant and Portable Lamp bring historical integrity and aesthetic refinement. Designed to complement various interiors, they enhance modern spaces with refined lighting. Whether placed over a dining table or moved from room to room, these lamps contribute to a carefully curated atmosphere and a harmonious spatial experience. One principle remains central: great lighting enhances great interiors. With Louis Poulsen’s VL45 Radiohus series, illumination reaches new dimensions, enriching spaces with thoughtful design and craftsmanship.
