If there was one major surprise on the Spring runways, it was the dominance of past references which, when paired well, can possess a thoroughly modern appeal. There is, however, one huge caveat: the “past” no longer refers to a retro-laden connotation, but rather a spectrum of contemporary denotations — from timeless classics to avant-garde offerings. Silvia Venturini led the charge at Fendi, presenting men in this style’s endless variations, but the past was equally abundant elsewhere.
Adrian Appiolaza presented an archival vision of menswear at Moschino; Paul Smith offered painstakingly pristine suiting; Alexander McQueen’s Sean McGirr dipped into its trove to renew the founder’s codes. Let there be light(ness). No art form is as primed for that kind of heavenly decree as dance, which heeded the call with a story that turned out to be positively luminous and meaningfully hefty in equal measure.
From ballet to contemporary, theatre performance to hip hop, there’s never a dull surface on this artistic ground; rather, there’s a precise, poised grace to the shifts built on dance that run through the beat of a seam: the breezy toppers—to maximise movement—teamed with finely-sculpted gowns reign supreme here, while fitted lines and floating chiffons shine bright elsewhere. The story has its own quiet drama, too, in outfits wrapped in huge contrasting shadows that unite to become textile shapes, while offering wardrobe foundations that are refreshingly accessible (cue: the white shirt). So here’s the thing: whether these clothes needed a turn on the big dance stage of a world-known theatre is another question the dancers might want to pose to themselves. But you know what? Whatever.

LE MILE unpacks the culturally-enriched landscape of Saudi fashion, spotlighting a wealth of talents at the vanguard of change.
The creative pursuit of the global fashion community is no mean feat, as designers — rising and established — are grappling with systemic downturns day in and day out. But in times of social unrest and politically-complex scenarios, what can the system do to secure a healthier, far more diverse place in the industry that pledges to be progressive? Saudi Fashion doesn’t always epitomize burkas and veiled garments; rather, it juxtaposes the elegance of modest fashion and the art of conceal and reveal, with a subtly refined take on women’s dressing without the urge to unleash too much flesh.

The renowned fair WHITE Milano and the Saudi 100 Brands program is here to prove just that: set to launch into this season with a new format, an event taking place during Milan Fashion Week at the Palazzo Serbelloni on September 20th, it fuses dance, culture and fashion, with a gala activation that will showcase the Saudi collections across five distinct categories.
Each collection will be presented with its own unique scenography and choreography, curated with the participation of dancers from the renowned La Scala Theatre. This season’s initiative lies in the Saudi 100 Brands program, an initiative by the Saudi Fashion Commission that provides essential tools and resources, empowering designers to share their work with global audiences and achieve international acclaim through distinctive styles. Moreover, building upon the success of their collaboration last year, WHITE Milano and the Saudi Fashion Commission are set to raise the bar yet again.
All designers will display within one dedicated space, collectively enriching and elevating each individual artistic identity. The diverse group of Saudi talents, most of which is female, is poised to take the exhibition’s stage, showcasing an exciting array of couture, ready-to-wear fashion, handbags, jewelry, fragrances, and footwear collections. Both seasoned and emerging Saudi designers are weaving the essence and narrative of their homeland into their creations.

Between September 22-25, 2023, this special segment showcased a mélange of the old and new, with a particular emphasis on the rising stars of fashion. As we meander through these narrative aisles, one thing becomes clear: this is not just fashion; it's storytelling, craftsmanship, and innovation.

The Voices Behind the Vision
ALBERTO CIASCHINI
In Alberto Ciaschini's SS 24 collection, luxury footwear transcends tradition. Drawing inspiration from the roaring 1920s, Ciaschini interprets an audacious form of seduction. Alberto said, "The 1920s influenced my footwear because... cigarettes became a fashion statement embraced by women as well." With this spirit, the collection embodies more than shoes; they're a narrative of irony, humor, and allure. The cigarette heel especially stands out as Ciaschini believes it encapsulates the spirit of the modern woman, "expressing self-irony, and yet remains true to her unique allure."
RISA NAKAMURA
Risa Nakamura crafts with precision and identity. Her narrative is not just about creation but the meticulous pursuit of perfection. She recalled, "I was deeply impacted by what I saw and felt in Tokyo around the year 2000... I felt that I had discovered a similar way of living." Nakamura's commitment to detail is unmistakable. She elucidates, "I believe that clothes can be treasured... when you can feel the depth of their creation and connect with their creativity." In envisioning her trajectory in the fashion landscape, Nakamura emphasizes her respect for people and the aspiration to create products that exude individuality.
SAMANTA VIRGINIO
Samanta Virginio's debut collection, "The Vixen Garden," is a blend of audacious femininity from various eras. Speaking on her muses, Virginia Oldoini and Vivian Ward, she notes, "These two women were daring, self-assured, and masters at shaping their own image – qualities that modern women also possess today." The couture petal technique, an integral part of her collection, was elaborated by Virginio as an inspiration "to reimagine the voluminous look of fur but evolved into a unique aesthetic inspired by the vibrancy of flowers."

TOTON
TOTON, under the aegis of Toton Januar, explores the nuances of the Kebaya. Toton believes in the boundless future of Kebaya, "Its simple form and adaptability to various environments and influences make it one of the most versatile pieces of traditional attire." Upcycled materials play an essential role, as he mentions, "Upcycled materials often serve as the starting point for our design process." Marrying teachings from Parsons New School of Design with Indonesian traditions, he acknowledges the challenges in navigating the juxtaposition of business sustainability and cultural preservation.
Studio PANSTERS
Lieke Pansters of Studio PANSTERS narrates a tale of introspection and craftsmanship. She speaks candidly about her transition to weaving, saying, "Weaving presents a unique paradox... rooted in the simplicity of repetitive motions and materials." Anni Albers' profound influence on her journey is clear when she quotes her, saying, "YOU can go anywhere from anywhere," a mantra that seems to guide her work. Pansters envisions handweaving's future in fashion and interior design as a unique mark of artisanal craftsmanship that sets it apart.
